Fiona Ward reflects on her ‘REconomy roadtrip’: big challenges and big possibilities

Fiona Ward (far right) with members of Transition Town Lewes’ Enterprise group and a few visitors from Brighton.

Fiona Ward of the REconomy Project recently visited a number of Transition initiatives to find out how their work creating a new economy for their community is going.  As the REconomy Day (on the Friday before the Transition Network conference) continues to fill up (over 100 people at last count), I spoke to her, and asked her about her trip:

She has also written a fantastic blog about the key learnings from the trip, as well as reports from each place she visited, which are essential reading in terms of the current state of play of emerging Transition social enterprises.  She introduces her blog thus:

Transition Network conference 2012 preview: No:11 – Matt Harvey on the Transition Cabaret night

One of the highlights of the 2012 Transition Network conference will be the Transition Cabaret on the Saturday night.  It will feature James Marriott of Platform, actor and performer Ben Mellor, the social arts project In Your Own Skin with live vocals from Juliette Russell, performer poet Kate Tempest, live music and dancing from Holly Molly and the Crackers, as well as other treats yet to be confirmed.  It will all be hosted by the “not only funny, but tender and true” (The Guardian) Matt Harvey.  We asked him to tell us more about the evening and what people can expect from it.  For those not attending the conference, tickets for the Cabaret are available from the Battersea Arts Centre box office.

Transition Network conference 2012 preview: No:9 – Paul Birch on ‘Standing up to Speak’

Paul Birch of Taunton Transition Town will be running one of the most intimate workshops, with an audience of 8 people, one that offers the potential for some focusing on and fine-tuning of your public speaking skills, entitled ‘Standing up to Speak’.  We asked Paul what people can expect from the workshop, and what it is that he looks forward to about Transition Network conferences:

Can you offer a Transition Network conference attendee a bed for the night?

As you may have gathered by now, the Transition Network conference is set for the weekend of 15/16-September at the Battersea Arts Centre in London and there are lots of Transitioners from out of town who are looking for a place to rest their weary but deeply inspired heads each night. Some are coming from elsewhere in the UK, others from as far afield as Brazil and Australia. If you can find some space for any of them, you’d be doing them a massive favour, particularly for those from countries where current economic tribulations have put commercial London accommodation out of reach.
