Developing community Energy Descent strategies, as has been discussed in previous posts, involves a community creating a vision of the future it wants. Arising from this is the need to facilitate the community taking the next step to create the future it has visioned. I would like to offer an exercise you might like to try to help this to happen.
It began life as an exercise in Skye and Robin Clanfield’s book “The Manual of Teaching Permaculture Creatively” called ‘bunyips’. I have evolved it further through an exercise I developed for the Mens Group I was part of in Ireland (hi fellas!), and here have adapted it further for use in Energy Descent work.

**Colin Campbell** (here looking full of Christmas cheer!) recently recorded an interview with **Global Public Media** which explores the Oil Depletion Protocol. It gives a very good overview of the Protocol and he also refers to the Kinsale Energy Descent process as a good example of what needs to be done as a response to peak oil. If you have never heard Colin before this gives a good introduction to him. GPM also recorded an interview with me last night which will be posted soon, I’ll let you know when that goes up. It was only a couple of weeks ago but it had passed me by. George Monbiot‘s speech to the Climate Change March in London is definitely worth a read. Over the last few months, judging by his articles in the Guardian, his peak oil awareness has been developing exponentially. In his speech he directly links peak oil and climate change and sets out the severity of the challenge we face.

I have a bank account with the Co-operative Bank, as they have made the most efforts towards being an ethical bank that offers everday services, so far as I can tell. The other day in received a mail shot from them, containing a leaflet from CIS, which is their investment and insurance branch, entitled **”Go for growth, with a clear conscience’**. The leaflet promoted their Unit Trusts, which featured four companies that CIS believe represent ‘sustainability in action’. These are GlaxoSmithKline, Vodaphone, National Express and Amazon. I was incredulous … National Express maybe, promoting public transport and so on, but the rest of them?

On Friday 16th December in Totnes, members of the Global Eco-Village Network, GAIA University, Sustainable Ireland Co-Operative, Transition Culture and others came together to explore the ‘heart’ aspect of energy descent planning work. The meeting was part of the initial work to design an Energy Descent process for Totnes, and invited people with relevant experience to share their ideas in a day-long dialogue.
