A recent Transition Training in Chile....
It’s the end of the month again, which means it’s time to bring you a taste of the wonderful Transitioney things that have been going on around the world. We’ll start in South America with some very exciting news from Colombia where they recently held their first three Transition Trainings, and here’s a report with a few pictures. And then there’s news of Chile’s first Transition Town at El Manzano in the BíoBío Region, started by three brothers who also established the Ecoescuela where they teach sustainable lifestyles.

You win some, you lose some. In July 2008, Somerset County Council, then a Liberal Democrat-controlled council, passed a resolution supporting its local Transition initiatives. It was much lauded as a visionary piece of policy-making, a council noting the vibrant activity of Transition groups within the county and deciding to honour that and to begin seriously to explore with them the potential overlaps and interfaces between those two ‘tiers’ in the community. However, it has become clear that what started so boldly and with such great promise has since fallen away. In the spirit of learning from such reversals, this piece explores what we can learn from recent developments in Somerset, and also what we might draw from them in relation to the government’s current ‘localism’ agenda.

You have amazed us again with all the wonderful things you’re doing…so here’s a taste of what’s going on in the world of Transition. Let’s start in Canada. Transition Guelph will Unleash their initiative with a Resilience 2011 Community Festival and become the second official Transition initiative in Canada…all very exciting! There’ll be lots of activities to inspire local people and build interest while also celebrating the many wonderful things already happening to make Guelph sustainable and resilient. They need volunteers to help make the day a success so why not join in the fun? Radio Ecoshock recently aired a one hour programme called ‘Transition – the West Coast Scene’, and you can listen to it online here, and there’ll be more programmes coming up soon that discuss related topics, so keep listening.

It is often asked, “if a tree falls in a forest and there is no-one there to hear it, does it make a sound?” Likewise, one might ask, “if a Transition initiative sets up a really great project but doesn’t include it in Transition Network’s Projects Directory, does it maximise its impact and replicability?” There are already 114 great projects in the directory, but we know there are lot more projects out there than have yet made it in there. It’s simple, its free, its easy, and there is a step-by-step guide to how to upload projects. In researching the forthcoming new Transition book, it is clear that there are loads of great things happening, so do tell the world about what you are doing, and also have a good rummage around in the Directory, there’s loads of inspiring projects underway….

From my experience of going to different events which promote the concept of social enterprise, it is clear that the idea that social enterprise can be used as a driver for decarbonisation and economic localisation is a very small but emergent part of the social enterprise ‘scene’. It was therefore timely and fascinating to spend 2 days in Totnes last week exploring, in a collaboration between Transition Network, Local United and Transition Town Totnes, the role social enterprise and entrepreneurship might play in building resilience at the local level.
