A Short Film for your viewing pleasure: “Somerset in Transition”

On May 30th 2009, Transition Glastonbury hosted an event called ‘Somerset in Transition’, which brought together people involved in Transition initiatives from across the county.  Speakers included Jeremy Leggett, Shaun Chamberlin and Jacqi Hodgson.  A young budding film maker, Jack Thompson-Roylance, from Glastonbury, brought along his camera and made a short film about the day.  Here it is.  Enjoy, and have a good weekend.

Book Your Screenings of ‘In Transition’ Now

movie3‘In Transition’, the 50 minute film about Transition created, in part, using the stories that Transition initiatives themselves filmed, is now completed.  The final cut is all done, and rather good it is too.  It has been rearranged from that previewed online and that shown at the Transition Network conference, and it contains a whole new section too.  As we mentioned before, the film will be released in different stages, ending up with a 2 disc DVD set available in December.  The first stage is for Transition initiatives to screen the film, and we are keen to get as many initiatives as possible to show it on September 9th.  Helen at Transition Network will be contacting all the ‘official’ Transition initiatives over the next few days, but if you would like to arrange a screening where you are, please contact her at transitionmovie (at) googlemail.com, or call her on 05601531882.  You never know, we might get more premieres on one day than ‘Age of Stupid’!

A Transition Take on the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan

lowcarbonplancoverAfter many months of Ed Milliband putting himself out there are a Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change that actually gets climate change, finally his big Plan, the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan was unveiled on Wednesday, in a speech in the House of Commons that namechecked Transition Towns and which is the boldest national vision for a low carbon society yet seen.  Many others have since pitched in with their thoughts, I thought it might be useful here to offer an analysis from a Transition perspective.  In his speech, Milliband said “we know from the Transition Towns movement the power of community action to motivate people..”, clearly an outcome of his attendance as a ‘Keynote Listener’ at the Transition Network conference in May. So how does the Plan measure up, and does it actually advance what Transition initiatives and the wider relocalisation movement are doing?

localfoodcoverSeptember 17th 2009 sees the publication of the keenly awaited ‘Local Food: how to make it happen in your community’, the first in a series of Transition Guides exploring different aspects of Transition at a community level.  You can download the blad here (blad stands for ‘book layout and design’ and is a small document that gives booksellers a taste of the book).  As the book nears completion, I asked the lead author, Tamzin Pinkerton, a few questions by way of introducing the book…
