Here is an amazing story from the Forest of Dean, sent to me by Sue Clarke, which tells the story of some amazing developments taking place there. It demonstrates how seriously the Transition approach is being taken at high levels, and how effective focused action can be. It will be very exciting to see where it all goes and what happens next, and many thanks for Sue for sharing this wonderful story with us.

The next day began with a great exercise, mapping the Transition movement physically in the hall. Firstly people were asked to arrange themselves geographically as a huge physical map of the world. Sophy and I then walked among the assembled throng, stopping in various places to ask how their Transition initiative is going, and so on.

The final day began with rain driving on the bedroom window. This extraordinary week at Findhorn had offered us a year’s worth of weather in one week. Snow, sleet, an odd kind of snow I’ve never seen before that looked more like polystyrene pellets than actual snow and that actually bounced when it hit the ground, sun warm enough for people to lie on the grass to soak it up, hard frost, strong chill winds and now, driving rain.

I missed the first speaker of the day, Alan Hobbett, whose talk was called “Community Power, the imminent revolution”, because I was doing an interview with Joanna Macy which I will post here as soon as I have transcribed it. After the break it was my turn. Taking to heart Jonathan’s request to rethink and reflect what had gone before, I think this was one of the most personal talks I have ever done. Something about being here and speaking here allows one to take risks, to feel held to push things that bit further.

Last week saw the first unveiling of The Transition Handbook, at the Civic Hall in Totnes. Around 150 people came along to the Celebration, and were greeted on arrival by music from local band the Jawa Trio, who played both at the beginning and at the end of the evening. Most of the Transition Town Totnes groups were there, with tables and displays highlighting the work they have been doing over the last 18 months. The evening began with John Elford of Green Books calling the Handbook “the most important book we have yet published”, and telling the story of how they ended up being the book’s publishers.
