The Bottom Line: business gets real about the economy…

bottom-line-2

There is that old saying about how when a new idea emerges, at first it is derided, then ignored, and then finally treated as though it had always been there (or something).  It was fascinating listening, a few days ago, to a programme on Radio 4 called ‘The Bottom Line‘, which you can listen to here for the next few days.  Host Evan Davis brought together Dr Shumeet Banerji, chief executive of management consultants Booz and Co, Rita Clifton, chairman of Interbrand London, and hedge fund manager Hugh Hendry, founder of Eclectica Asset Management to discuss various business issues of the day.  In this week’s show they discussed whether the downturn is here to stay and whether people should embrace a new era of austerity.  Six months ago the very idea would have been derided, but it is fascinating in this programme to hear how far such people have shifted.

Quote of the Day: from Grazia Magazine

graziaAm heads down at the moment editing the ‘Can Totnes Feed Itself’ paper I hope to post here soon.  In the meantime, here is a wonderful quote which is quite a sign of the times, spotted in the Independent on Sunday, from Paula Reed, fashion journalist for Grazia Magazine;

“We are living in extraordinary times: 2008  is likely to be seen by our children as a watershed moment – the end of a glittering party, when we consumed, celebrated and indulged ourselves like we were guests at a table groaning with good things that would never end.  Circumstances demand we become wiser now”.

Ed Milliband Visits the Transition Network Conference as a ‘Keynote Listener’

bacmillibEd Milliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, visited the Transition Network conference on Friday afternoon as a ‘Keynote Listener’, which all went very well.  He was meant to only stay for half an hour, but ended up stayed nearly an hour and a half.  When he arrived I explained to him how Open Space worked, and he looked through the list of Open Space sessions and picked a few he’d like to go to.  After sitting in on 3 sessions, including a very interesting one about how to communicate the idea of ‘less’, he came back down to the atrium where Peter Lipman and myself (well, Peter mostly…) interviewed him.  It was a fascinating conversation, one you can hear below.

Rob’s First Post from the Transition Network conference

bac1Made it just in time, my lift up from Totnes arriving at the Battersea Arts Centre at 12.45pm, ready for the 1’o’clock start (you can hear Carl Munson’s first Transition Radio podcast here, which captures the opening of the event). What an amazing place BAC is, the hall is absolutely huge, and the building is a warren of corridors and rooms.  My blogging output over the conference won’t be spectacular, as documenting the event online is in safe hands and I seem to be vastly busy; Ciaran Mundy is, as you will see below, organising various people blogging the event, and Carl Munson is uploading podcasts and photos.  Anyway, here are just a few thoughts on today….

My Conference – Miranda from Ecomotion is back again. . .

Miranda Vaughan Jones

Day one kicks off with all of the unusual formalities we have come to expect from T.T. – an exercise involving asking strangers how old they are, Ed Miliband being introduced as a keynote listener, and Sophy setting the scene with her seductive sibilance reminiscent of the woman from the M&S adverts.  This is not just a conference…this is a Transition Network conference.
