Transition Network Conference 2010 Booklet Now Available
Here’s what I’ve been doing for the last 2 weeks! Everyone who comes to the 2010 Transition Network conference (starting in 8 days) will be given a 108 page booklet containing the programme of events, the complete guide to all the workshops, and the working draft of the ‘seeing Transition as a pattern language’ work I have been doing, and around which the conference, and the second edition of ‘The Transition Handbook’, is based (of which more in coming weeks). You can download the booklet in two parts, the main document here (it is a big file, 8.64MB) and the cover here. For those of you who are coming, here is an opportunity in advance to familiarise yourself with it. For those of you not coming, here’s what you’re missing, there is still time to book. If you find any typos, I don’t want to know, it has gone to the printers!

Is there a glitch in the links? When I attempt to download, I can see it for just a split-second… then gone I know not where, leaving na blank screen. I see it has 108 pages, but I can’t see what’s on them!

Stupendous job!
Just reading the descriptions of the workshops and talks is exhilarating.
The Pattern Language approach to Transition is brilliant. Thus far, Transition has been able to listen to criticisms and incorporate them, making it a stronger and deeper movement.

I also like the idea of short chapters presenting various concepts for Transition and I find them very useful. However, one chapter still seems to be missing – the one on participatory budgeting 😉 The recent example of participatory budgeting from the US is very encouraging and I think PB has a great potential for the Transition initiatives:

I would also suggest an additional chapter on decision-making processes in local community. Personally I find it essential to have a good mechanism for making decisions together as a whole community, rather than relying on elected representatives.

Hi Cliff,
Have contacted our webmaster, he has checked it all out and thinks all is well…. he suggests it must be a problem at your end. I hope you are able to resolve it… if not contact me directly and I’ll send you the file.
Best wishes

Wonderful to see the patterns idea being applied to Transition – Rob, I’m really looking forward to seeing your expanded thinking on this.

I think the patterns are an excellent evolution as a way of describing Transition. It would be great if (in true Open Source style) they could be documented on the Transition wiki such that they can be evolved and additional patterns added by the community.
Also one useful reference is “Liberating Voices!
A Pattern Language for Communication Revolution” (see http://www.publicsphereproject.org/patterns/) which is documenting patterns for communications. Many of these are very relevant to Transition too I feel.
Little confused by the “full text” entry, which lacks the section titles – is that intended? I think the section titles (Problem, Solution, etc) are really helpful to define a pattern.

Cliff, if you are viewing the pdf file through a web browser (eg. Firefox or Internet Explorer) it may be a matter of the wrong ‘encoding’ being used by your web browser. Using the Chrome browser I often get a blank screen instead of a pdf, but it’s easily fixed by trying different encodings. In Internet Explorer, select view-encoding-autoselect, or manually test different options from the encoding menu. Even easier: try viewing the pdf file via an actual pdf reader application, such as Adobe Reader, Foxit or Sumatra.

fourcultures, thanks.
But your suggestions are beyond me. I won’t bore everyone and myself with which-button-doesn’t-get-me-where saga. Besides, Rob has sent it direct via email, which has delivered the goods.
Meanwhile, looking forward to a stimulating conference…
