We have often run competitions in the past at **Transition Culture**, but never before one for a prize worth **£1,200!** Those lovely folks at Schumacher College have offered us a place on the unmissable Life After Oil course to give away in a competition. Really, it doesn’t get much better than this. You could be spending two weeks in lovely Totnes, in the beautiful environs of Schumacher College with some of the leading names in peak oil and energy descent solutions, on the year’s finest peak oil education opportunity.

There will be a short break here at **Transition Culture**, as I am away until Friday. I am going to the island of Jersey to do a few talks and have meetings with island dignitaries about powerdown and energy descent and how the island might best prepare. The trip has been organised by the Jersey National Trust, the Jersey Organic Trust and Jersey Slow Food, and is intended to increase awareness about the need for more localised approaches to food production. I’ll let you know how it went when I get back. Next post here will be this Friday.

**Transition Town Totnes Hosts Organic Gardening Guru Bob Flowerdew.**
Bob Flowerdew, BBC Radio 4’s organic gardening expert, will be visiting Totnes on Thursday 26th Oct. to give a public talk about his system of “No Work Gardening”, which is also the title of his latest book. The talk will take place in the Totnes Civic Hall at 7.30 pm (doors open at 6.45 pm) Bob’s talk aims to present the choices open to us all for creating organic gardens with the minimum of effort, and to encourage us to relax and enjoy our gardening through letting Nature, to a large extent, do the work. The evening also sees the official launch of the Transition Town Totnes food group, which will be exploring the practicalities of the town becoming more self reliant in terms of food provision.

On Saturday we hosted our second Open Space Day in Totnes, this time focusing on energy. Although the attendance was smaller, it was as, if not more, focused than the last one on food. Interestingly, although we started with less people, we ended the day with more people than before. We’re still trying to figure that one out. It generated a huge amount of ideas and information, which we posted online as the event unfolded, as well as photos of the event. With the Transition Town Totnes website being a Wiki site, you can add your ideas to those generated at the meeting. The final Open Space event of 2006 will be on Saturday 4th November and will look at building and housing.

Following the success of last weekend’s Open Space day on food, and our successful piloting of posting the event live online as it unfolded, we are doing the same today (Saturday 14th October) between 10am and 4pm GMT. The ideas generated and the thoughts that emerge will, along with photos of the event, be posted in real time on the Transition Town Totnes website. You will be able to send in your thoughts and comments, which will be made available to the participants. See you there.
