The recent post exploring whether or not our relationship to oil can be seen in terms of a dependency certainly got you going, and yielded some fascinating comments. Some other discussion boards on the net picked up the article and some people could barely restrain their fury at the notion that we might be addicted to oil. The feedback on **Transition Culture** was very interesting, a good balance of for and against. I wanted to make a few observations on some of the comments and respond to some of the points they raised.

It is one thing to build the Biomes, the structures, the plantings and so on, but once you have got the people there how do you maximise the opportunity to raise their awareness on environmental issues without being too in your face, too preachy or too judgemental? I was really impressed by how the Eden Project does this. Most of the environmental information that you get as you go around comes in under the radar. The messages are subtle but thought provoking. Its power was, I felt in its gentleness.

There is a beautiful film clip on Joanna Macy’s website of her outlining the concept of the Great Turning. You need to click on “Video Project for the Work That Reconnects” to start it. I find her vision very powerful, and in this clip she comes across as a passionate teacher and as someone who deeply feels that exhilaration of these transitionary times. She is one of the people with the most profound insights into this whole question. I am fortunate enough to be doing a course with her in a month’s time, something I have waited 10 years to get the opportunity to do. The Association for the Study of Peak Oil have just announced the preliminary line-up for this year’s ASPO5 conference in Pisa in July. Looks fantastic, if you can make it and you are interested in peak oil it really will be the place to be. Some great speakers, I am particularly looking forward to Robert Hirsch, Folke Gunther, Richard Heinberg and Jeremy Leggett (although I have to confess in my ignorance there are many speakers I’ve never heard of!). I’ve never been before, closest I’ve ever been to an ASPO conference is the little clips in the End of Suburbia. The full line up is as follows;

**Wow**. The biomes at Eden are the largest greenhouses in the world and are utterly stunning. As you enter the biomes your breath is truly taken away. These massive structures are impressive from the outside, but it is from the inside that you really come to appreciate their majesty. They are truly mindboggling structures. The first thing that hits you as you enter is the heat, particularly in the tropical biome. Once you get in and start walking around, it is fascinating how they have actually used the space, and the amazing collection of plants they have assembled.
