Let’s not tart this up. We don’t have an energy source that provides as much energy per unit as oil does. So the change isn’t for a better standard of living. It’s going to be a lesser. And different! And we will continue to make the best of it as the human creature always has done, until we can’t support ourselves in then environment.

I have to disagree with the choice of word; much as I revere the Odums- the concepts are all bang on; but “descent” will lose us the audience we most need to reach, the “unaware”. Few disasters have been greater than the choice of the phrase “Global Warming” – it has allowed decades of quibbling, some malevolent, some simply foolish. The fact that “warming” can cause cooling, is simply too much for most of the casually interested to grasp. It makes them laugh. “Climate Collapse” would have perhaps served us far better, and is no less accurate. What we need is a good sound byte that conveys all the POSITIVE aspects of the change, and does not imply LESS of anything. “Optimizing” energy use is what we must do- now we just need a way to say it that does not alienate plain folks.
