One of my favourite books of 2010 was Tessy Britton’s ‘Handmade: portraits of emergent new community culture’. A printed-on-demand square colourful book, it explored innovative social enterprises emerging around the world. The book is now in the process of being put online chapter by chapter, you can read Tessy’s introduction here, and my own personal favourite, the PieLab, here (a brilliant project). I wrote a chapter for ‘Handmade’ about, yes, you guessed it, Transition, which you can see below in an amazing “about 10 years ahead of Rob’s understanding of technology” embedded thing where you can actually turn the pages and everything! A radical new law
In October 2007 a new law was created. This new law has, for the first time, set up a ‘bottom-up’ process where local people can drive central government action to protect or create truly localised and sustainable communities. It establishes the right for local people and councils to submit proposals for government action. Government is then required not just to consult, but to try to reach agreement on the implementation of those proposals.

Here’s another review of ‘Localisation and Resilience’, this time from the latest edition of Permaculture Magazine:
It’s nearly three years since I received a copy of The Transition Handbook and was inspired to become involved in the movement. Much has happened since then both in terms of the way Transition has developed and in the wider world of global economics and environmental concerns. So it was with great interest that I read Rob Hopkins’ PhD thesis (progenitor of the Transition model).
