Ingredients of Transition: Critical Thinking

Context

The design of STRATEGIC LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE (5.5) is, in the Transition context, ultimately about the allocation of scarce resources to create a resilient, more localised infrastructure more appropriate to a future of diminishing resources.  It is vital therefore that a Transition initiative, whether in its AWARENESS RAISING (2.9), STANDING UP TO SPEAK (1.8) or when designing its PRACTICAL MANIFESTATIONS (3.9) or researching its ENERGY DESCENT ACTION PLAN (5.1), does so based on good evaluation of the evidence available.

An Update on the ‘Ingredients of Transition’ project

My mission had been to get a first draft of all the ingredients done before the Christmas break, but I haven’t quite managed it: of the 62 initial ingredients there are 8 still to do, 6 of which I haven’t started yet and 2 of which are nearly completed.  The idea after Christmas is to finish the outstanding ones and then to go back thr0ugh them weaving in your comments, as well as doing the framing section of the book, with an overall deadline of the end of March.  Gulp.  Anyway, we’re doing alright I think.  So, by way of an update, here is the list of ingredients, showing you what’s already done, with links, as well as the outstanding ones, which are those not shown as links … do keep the comments coming in, they have been so vital in shaping this project…. perhaps this is also a useful point to reflect on what you think of this project so far, and how it is progressing?

Ingredients of Transition: Transition Training

Training for Transition - Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN: May 22-23 2010.

Thanks to everyone who contributed stories and comments that helped to shape this ingredient….

Context:

It has been found to be extremely useful for some, or all, of the initiating members of a Transition initiative to undertake Transition Training at the early stage of the project’s development. It offers insights into a range of necessary tools and skills, and is a two day immersion in the theory and practice of Transition.  Every training is also a regional gathering where participants can learn from (and meet) others as passionate as themselves about creating a resilient and relocalised place, learning about (among other things) RUNNING SUCCESSFUL MEETINGS and sustaining MOMENTUM, and many of the aspects of inner Transition work.

Needing your thoughts for a ‘Transition Enabling Act’

Well now, here’s an idea.  At last week’s ‘Confronting Change’ event in London (see left), a question was asked about politics, and how Transition might be accelerated in terms of mainstream politics.  Polly Higgins, who is a barrister, and who is promoting the idea of international legislation to outlaw ‘ecocide’, suggested that, in the same way that certain key pieces of enabling legislation have led to great advances in the past, perhaps the time is right for a Transition Enabling Act, designed not to ban lots of things, but positive legislation that enables all that needs to happen in order for Transition to scale up rapidly over the next 5 years.  This was met with much excitement, with Michael Meacher MP saying that were such legislation to exist, he would be happy to help drive it through the House of Commons.  So, how about it?  What we need now is your input, debate and discussion…. Ingredients of Transition: Engaging Young People

Gathering young people's visions of the future at the Great Unleashing of Transition Malvern Hills

Context

Part of any Transition initiative practicing INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY (2.2) is the successful engagement of young people in the process.  Given that Transition is about the creation of a more resilient future, then it is obvious that the people who will inhabit that world are central to the STRATEGIC THINKING (5.10) that goes into designing it.  Young people can also contribute a great deal to PRACTICAL MANIFESTATIONS (3.9) of Transition.
