The gardening stuff was great. However I could have done without the student politics bit about how wonderful Cuba is. It censors internet access, is a one party state which bans any other parties and has been criticised by varoious human rights organisations for it's treatment of dissadents ( which includes torture and extra judicial killings).

One point: a delivery van that serves an entire neighborhood can take dozens of individual cars off the road. (Make that van a rechargeable electric vehicle or a hybrid, and it makes more sense.)

The other point is restoring sane, walkable communities where you could, in theory, walk to the public market and get your gardening stuff in 10 minutes or less. Instead, it's in a shopping centre surrounded by acres of parking.

oh yes, check out the Cuba stuff -- Google "Special Period" -- the folks at the US-based Community Solutions group have excellent documentation and PowerPoints about Cuba's embrace of widespread permaculture and urban agriculture practices when they lost Soviet oil in 1989.

PRAISE BE to Monty - this is superb stuff. I'm sure the local economy will think up ways to fill the supply gap - as food production gets set to become even more popular than it already is.

It was part of a 25-page Going Green special which is encouraging. The final article mentions the example of Cuba adjusting to low oil inputs. Monty lost focus at this point and "heartily recommends" going to see it in person. Gardner's World is a commercial magazine funded by advertising, which limits the impact of Monty's reduce/reuse/recycle message. The green section featured an advert for Nestle who are still boycotted for promoting baby milk. Possibly the worst example of food miles imaginable :-)
