Mayor Makes Totnes the Nut Capital of Britain…
We had a wonderful morning yesterday planting walnut and almond trees supplied by the Agroforestry Research Trust on Vire Island in the middle of Totnes. The local press turned out, and the Mayor of Totnes, wearing the ceremonial chain planted a fine French walnut tree, posing with a pile of walnuts on the end of a shovel! The sun shone after days of rain, and various TTTers turned out to dig holes and share in the unique pleasure that one can only experience from planting trees with friends. “The Mayor of Totnes, Pruw Boswell, today led Totnes in its first steps towards its ambition to become the “Nut Capital of Britain”. Transition Town Totnes and the Dartington-based Agroforestry Research Trust are proposing an exciting new initiative to encourage widespread planting of nut trees in the area. Enthusiastically launching the initiative, the Mayor planted two walnut and five almond trees on Vire Island in central Totnes this morning.
Rob Hopkins, the initiator of the Transition Town Totnes project explained why nuts would always be welcome in Totnes:
“The Transition Town Totnes project is already mobilising a movement to help the community to move away from dependency on oil for food, energy, housing, and all aspects of our lives. If we can produce and enjoy much of our food locally, we can reduce the need for oil to transport our food. Not only will this lessen our impact on climate change, but having strong local food systems will protect our food security as oil prices rise. Nuts can provide an important local source of protein – especially for vegetarians – while simultaneously locking up carbon and providing very high quality timber.”
After 15 years of research, the Agroforestry Research Trust now have varieties of walnut and sweet chestnut that will crop reliably and heavily in our climate every year. It may be just a shell of an idea, but Transition Town Totnes hope to see the community taking advantage of this pioneering work, and going nuts for the plan.
“Totnes needs more nuts,” said the mayor. “I am only too happy to do my bit”, adding, “it takes one to know one!”

Congratulations to you, Rob, and to Totnes for this happy and visible program. People everywhere need ideas they can admire and adapt to their own backyard and town. This is the kind of idea that grows on one!
Too many of the proposed solutions to global warming/peak oil seem so massive and complicated that most people have trouble understanding why, how, and when it would work. To have hope, we need some practical, visible, copyable efforts that we can do personally and in groups.
