&lt;p&gt;It&#039;s my belief that one reason why so many people thing that hi-tech solutions will save us all is because they&#039;ve seen the future on Star Trek, Star Wars et al. They know they&#039;ll have faster than light starships, warp drive, Earl Grey tea - hot!, transporter beams, (still no same sex-couples strangely ...), holodecks, ad nauseam. They know it&#039;s fiction, but it&#039;s so frequently presented on TV and on film that I reckon it&#039;s seeped into people&#039;s conciousness, not as a possible future, but THE future. So, in this case a report written from a different future is a great way to get that feeling of possibility on a different track.&lt;/p&gt;
