"Whereas our pre-industrial society was built on the foundations of such complexity and webs of interconnections, cheap oil has allowed us to pitch this whole concept into the skip and replace it with linear models and monocultures. Now we are coming to realise that quite possibly our very survival depends on our ability to rebuild this complexity and interconnectedness."

This statement pretty much sums up the current problem that we face.

There are many that scoff at using "the old ways", the thing that they are not getting is the fact that they actually work..

The current level of technology has done nothing more than cut neighbors off from one another. Why bother to visit them when you can ring them up, oh wait, if you actually bother...

The best thing that can happen is a resurgence of small community social interaction and values. The strides forward that we have made with technology have helped the economy and some othe aspects, but they have severely damaged the social dynamics as well.

Also Rob,

Is this:

"This work depends on each of us focusing our attentions where they can be most effective, perhaps rather than polarising this debate into doomers vs. powerdownifiers (or whatever), we should see our work collectively as being about the building of resilience on whatever scale we feel most able to address. Our efforts should be seen as mutually reinforcing rather than somehow conflicting"

~~~~
.. another way of saying that 'I now repudiate my former posts on this issue, in response to Zachary (why survivalists have got it wrong), and subsequent (Is Peak Oil Pessimism a Generation of Men Coming to Realise How Useless They Are?) as contributing towards the polarisation of the debate?
I'm a little confused... first you were browbeating the doomers for 'being wrong' and 'being useless' and now you appear to be lecturing those who are polarising the debate, about refraining from doing so.
Please clarify....
Thanks
Lara
Hmmmmm
This statement by Adam of Energy Bulletin, to Rob’s article, made me smile….
I think this was an excellent post, perhaps the last word for now in the doomer / individualist survivalist vs. slow crash / community organising discussion – which has spawned a series very interesting articles, for instance:
Notice anything about the authors…. male’s, and I imagine white males….. no less than the esteemed species who have been ‘leading’ our civilisation for the past 100 or so years… towards this very crisis!!!
I recalled the responses to Bob’s recent article mentioned above… — many white males — who bemoaned the lack of female’s in the Peak oil movement.. and recalled my repeated efforts to publish to Energy Bulletin, such as the following article published in the largest Farmers Magazine in Africa It’s All Downhill From Here, only to be ignored….
But, I guess at least my black male president listens somewhat… , and maybe his black female energy minister, may too… or not! ; who knows maybe at least more than white “happy relocalisiingâ€? males… (Egsample: When I make a request to ‘doomer’ Jay Hanson, I get a response with information; when I write a request for review of an article, to Rob Hoskins, I get no response at all, not even, ‘thanks but I’m busy’.)
Oh well… the joys of being an unsuccessful dog (failing to have the necessary kiss-ass sycophantic skills of ingratiating myself into the domain of hte white male peak oil species), as a recent killer ape-peak oil commentator put it:
“Dogs are successful social parasites. They excel at insinuating
themselves into the domain of another species. They affect a limited
range of human emotions such as friendliness, joy and neediness. In
this regard, dogs are surpassed only by women.
What da ya say ladies???? Time for a suffragette revolution??? See ya there..
