according to Earth Policy Institute President Lester Brown’s calculations, the amount of grain needed to fill a single 4WD 100-litre petrol tank with biofuel could feed a person for an entire year

Does that allow for the (oil) fuel in the fertilizers and farm machinery to grow the grain? If not it is hardly a comparison. Biofuel has a place keeping farm machinery, and ambulances going- but it is no panacea, and has no place in cars.

The comments on soil depletion from pine and eucalyptus are spot on. Even in the UK I have heard government sustainability advisors praising short rotation willow bio-mass. But its the same porblem - 20 years down the line the soil is truly depleted. Proper traditional coppicing is the best option, lasting centuries By the way sweet chestnut coppices much better than walnut. :-%
