Hi,
The fiat money - predominant today - is fraud in capital letters! In my view the only system that could sustain the world today is money which has INTRINSIC VALUE but to my utter surprise and disappointment there aren't many working in this area.

The quote of American banker is cent percent right. Dollar has sustained itself on behalf of all the oil been traded for it BUT HOW LONG?

What's going to happen when dollar collapses within next few years? A mass stampede from paper currencies towards a paperless system? Electronic Money to be more precise and this is where the ultimate danger lies.

Am working and researching more on this (though its not my field of study :) ) but it would do great benifit for mankind if people emerge from us who EXPOSE THIS UTTER FRAUDULENT SYSTEM WHICH HAS SUCKED THE BLOOD OUT OF 90% OF THE WORLD!

PS : Where could I find Bernard's book on the web?

Interesting thread. A new book out, titled, Life, Money & Illusion, talks about these issues, including Leitaer's work, in great detail. Info at www.SustainWell-Being.net and book summary at http://www.flora.org/sustain/LMI/lmisummary.html

His first book, Future of Money, is great. Do you know any more information about "Of Human Wealth"?

I've read "The Future of Money" and I was blown off my feet. I think that Bernard has done for anthropology what Linne, Darwin and Mendel combined did to biology. He has shown how the fundamental properties of the monetary systems can affect almost every decision made in a society.

Silvio Gesell realised a hundred years ago that something was wrong and deeply unfair with interest as concept, but Bernard take the field to completely new heights.

The discussion about monetary systems simply MUST be considered when talking about "sustainability" and PeakOil, and Bernards book should be mandatory reading in schools.

If you can't wait until Leitaer's book I've just read another extraordinary book on a similar topic. It's called "Economia - New economic systems to empower people and support the living world", by the Australian academic Geoff Davies.

It has some useful insights into economic systems, some arising from looking at economies using the newly developed paradigm of Complexity Theory. Davies shows that our economic system, in its current form, has instabilities built into it. Alternative monetary systems can be implemented to change the dynamics of our economy so that it serves us, instead of enslaving us.

The power of enconomy comes from the collective actions of the whole society. Perhaps a carefully designed monetary system could allow that power to be directed vaguely towards the common good?

He gives some concrete suggestions on transitioning to a such stabler and sensible system.

There's more info on his website,

Hi Rob
Money indeed... our nemesis. But the tide may yet be too strong to be turned if peak oil/dollar crash hits us as soon as this decade. The tide is 6-billion against what? 60-thousand? How to involve millions of uninterested people in energy descent issues? Any insight?
